Fortified Roof
Thanks to GNOEA member George Messing, Owner Messina’s Catering, for hosting this week’s networking event for GNOEA members at the Rooftop on Basin St!
Lonnie Smith, Guaranty Sheet Metal Works reported to the GNOEA members on the fortified roofs. They are certified for Fortified Roofing. Insurance carriers and some parishes have begun requiring additional steps to be taken during roof installations. These changes to the roof installation are designed to protect the home and potentially limit damage your home may sustain during a high wind event. Over time, the additional costs are being offset by additional discounts many insurers are offering discounts for the additional protection. Ultimately, these changes do provide additional protection to the home. Lonnie informed the membership that they can also get a possible tax credit on their income taxes if they have a fortified roof.
Ashley van der Meulen, Compass Inspection Services, LLC presented to the membership on the inspection process of fortified roofs. Ashley stated that homeowners can get discounts on their insurance with a wind mitigation survey or replacing their roof with a fortified roof. The wind mitigation program wind mitigation insurance credits and discounts were mandated by the Louisiana Department of Insurance (LDOI) based upon certain characteristics of a new or old home. Some items that warrant credits are Hip roof design, secondary water barrier, hurricane straps on rafters at the wall top plates, approved hurricane shutters or impact windows and wind rated architectural shingles. Homes built since 2007 were built under the Louisiana Uniform Constructions Code and should have some items that receive credits on the wind and hail portion of the homeowners policy. Single and two family residential properties qualify.
FORTIFIED mandates the use of specific materials and installation techniques. These include a wider drip edge and a fully adhered starter strip, which, when combined, establish a more robust system. FORTIFIED requires roof decks to be sealed to prevent this type of water damage. FORTIFIED requires the use of ring-shank nails that are installed in an improved pattern. This modification helps to firmly anchor the roof deck to your home during high winds. In fact, employing ring-shank nails nearly doubles the roof’s strength against powerful wind forces.
