Representative Laurie Schlegel

Laurie Schlegal is a State Representative for District 82. She was also appointed Chairwoman of House Education for the 2024-2028 term. Rep. Schlegal has served on various committees, including Ways and Means, Health and Welfare, Labor and Industrial, and the Joint Committee on Capital Outlay. She is dedicated to enacting legislation that addresses critical areas such as education, literacy, mental health, crime, public safety, lowering taxes and the protection of women and children. Additionally, she has supported measures aimed at improving the business and tax environment in Louisiana, with the goal of creating more job opportunities for our citizens.

Rep. Schlegal has a Master of Arts in Marriage & Family Counseling from the New Orleans Baptist Theological Seminar and graduated magna cum laude from Louisiana State University with a Bachelor of Science degree in Psychology and summa cum laude from Dominican High School.

Rep. Schlegal informed the members that Louisiana has jumped in 5 year from ranking 40th to 32nd in education. In literacy, Louisiana has recently passed education reforms and we have moved to 16th in 4th grade literacy. Louisiana has passed bills that “let teachers teach” to make sure they can have better classroom management.

Rep. Schlegal reported that in special session last year, the personal income tax credit was flattened to 3% and also flattened the corporate tax to 5.5%. The state is up to $70 billion in new eceonomic development coming into the state.
