MURIEL’S HOLIDAY PARTY
GNOEA will hold our Holiday Party at Muriel’s Restaurant this year on December 13th from 6:30 pm to 9:30 pm. Muriel’s requires that I purchase a certain amount of food and the more members we have attending the party, the cheaper it will be. The cost of $50.00 per person is a worst case scenario only. Please let Susan know if you plan on attending and how many will be in your party!
TODAY’S PROGRAM
Today we were pleased to have as our guest speaker Major General David M. Mize, R.S. Marine Corps Retired. Major General Mize attended the U.S. Naval Academy and graduated with Distinction (top 5%) in 1969. His first operational assignment was a one year combat tour in Vietnam where he served as a rifle platoon commander, an infantry company commander and a battalion operations officer.
From June 2001 until his retirement in the late 2003, he was the Commanding General of Marine Corps Base, Camp Lejeune which won the award as the Corps best base in 2002. He finished his active duty career with thirty-four and a half years of service in the Marine Corps. His personal decorations include the Defense Distinguished Service Medal, the Distinguished Service Medal, the Legion of Merit, the Bronze Star, Two Navy Commendation Medals, and the Combat Action Ribbon.
On January 1, 2009, he started working full time for the New Orleans Federal Alliance as their CEO and President. His main job in this role is to oversee the development and operation of the Federal City Project. This is the biggest economic development project in the State of Louisiana and will ensure the retention in New Orleans of the national headquarters of the Marine Corps Reserve.
The vision for Federal City is that it is to be a model for small military bases around the country. The intent is not to follow the traditional base organization plans but to minimize the costs and direct services provided by the military while integrating the facility more successfully into the surrounding neighborhoods.
Confronted by an imminent base closure in 2005 due to budget cuts, the State and community developed this public/ private partnership model to provide a new type of military base. Ultimately, in fifteen years, when all three phases are complete, Federal City is expected to provide 10,000 civil and military jobs, create a commercial center for Algiers, re-connect the surrounding neighborhoods to the river with through streets, provide a charter school that will serve the military families as well as students from the New Orleans area and provide an additional 1400 residences for military personnel and the general public.
We wish to thank Major General Mize for his very informative program.
