Marine Transportation, Oil and Gas Updates with Todd Clower

GNOEA met via Zoom on Tuesday August 18 for organization updates and to discuss the state of Oil & Gas and Marine Transportation with Todd Clower, GNOEA member and CEO of Harbor Towing & Fleeting.

Established in 1970, Harbor Towing & Fleeting operates four tugboats, as well as owns and operates Star Fleet – one of the most respected and successful inland barge fleeting facilities in the region.  The company is working with the Port of New Orleans on their port expansion.  Clower offered substantiated insight on the current oil and gas situation and its effects on the inland marine industry.  Due to the downturn of oil and gas usage, there is an enormous amount of liquid product parked and stored with no where to use it.  He indicated that if the travel industry were to reach 2019 levels, it could take as long as 18 months to use up the stored product.  If it is slower, the prediction is that it will take 6-9 months just to burn off the excess to get to the manageable levels.  Non-liquid dry cargo such as grain is in better shape, but the company is not involved.  The Inner Harbor Navigation Canal Lock Replacement and Repairs has proved to be challenging for the company.   The reality is that this industry will turnaround as it relates to the energy market globally.
