Port of New Orleans – Delivering Goods Yesterday, Today, Tomorrow – Michelle Ganon, Chief of Staff and Vice President Public Affairs for the Port of New Orleans

GNOEA met virtually, Tuesday, June 22, 2021 to hear from Michelle Ganon, Chief of Staff and Vice President Public Affairs for the Port of New Orleans on delivering goods yesterday, Today and Tomorrow. Celebrating 125 years, the Port of New Orleans’ jurisdiction goes beyond New Orleans to include St. Bernard and Jefferson. Primarily a container port, the Port of New Orleans is the only container port in Louisiana and has experienced double digit growth. Having acquired the New Orleans Public Belt Railroad, as an asset transfer originally run by the City of New Orleans, the Port exchanged the NOPBRR for 3 miles of public access at Governor Nichols and Esplanade wharfs to be developed into park space by the City. The Port is the only deep water port in the U.S. with access to six Class one Railroads servicing the Mississippi River Valley to Canada. Since July of 1896, the Port has operated as an independent sub agency of the State of Louisiana and does not collect tax dollars. They are self sufficient, relying on Federal and State grants.

Ms. Ganon added that cruises are expected to rebound quickly with four to seven day cruises from New Orleans and anticipates they will resume late summer/early fall.
