Insurance Update

Harry Kelleher, President of Harry Kelleher & Co., Inc

Thanks to GNOEA member George Messing, Owner Messina’s Catering, for hosting this week’s networking event for GNOEA members at the The Basin St. Station!

Harry Kelleher, is president of Harry Kelleher & Co., Inc, an independent insurance agency, protecting business and families in Greater New Orleans area.

Harry shared the challenges Louisiana and the Nation face with insurance today. Louisiana’s biggest challenge is the market share. Louisiana only has approx. 2% of the insurance market share. Harry reported that insurance claims have greatly increased since the 2000’s Nationwide.  Just since 2019 Nationwide homeowners premiums have increased 36%. The insurance premiums are not offsetting the losses today.

Harry informed GNOEA that the three year rule for carriers has been amended. The three year rule is when an insurance company cannot take any action against the insurer unless they have 2 or more non-weather related claims. The amended rule states that going forward new business is not protected by the three year rule. Going backward, a carrier can take action for up to 5% of their business in a given Parish.

Harry Kelleher advised there are some things homeowners can do to help with their premiums. A homeowner can ask their agent if there are credit available that they can get. Some companies have carbon monoxide, fire, water shut off, camera monitoring, generator, and gas leak protection credits.
