Jefferson Chamber President Todd Murphy Addresses GNOEA

GNOEA met via Zoom on Tuesday July 28 for organization updates and to discuss economic development and Jefferson Parish matters with Todd Murphy, President of the Jefferson Chamber of Commerce.

Murphy identified a busy and important legislative agenda, including opening the economy, lowering insurance rates, protection for businesses from COVID liability, tax relief and reform, early childhood funding and the Louisiana Economic Recovery Taskforce.  On the upcoming August 15th ballot, he expressed the importance of voting in support of the sale of East Jefferson Hospital, as well as renewing the waste management and unconsolidated Jefferson Parish Fire Department millages.  The chamber’s Covid response has been a very visible effort. There are concerns with the media exaggerating headlines and stories about increasing infection rates, when in reality the hospitals in our Jefferson Parish are now averaging about 18 Covid patients, which is no where near the 100 case average a few months back.  Decisions about our reopening are influenced by this misinformation.  During Covid, Jefferson has seen a decrease of approximately 18% in Sales Tax Collections, a significant increase in residential construction permits, and new companies moving into the parish.  Plans are underway to study areas of the Westbank for economic development.  The Jefferson Chamber is also working to bring more safe festivals and events to the parish.
