Labor Law Overview

Presented by Ed Harold, Regional Managing Partner – Fisher & Phillips

Thanks to member George Messina for catering this week’s networking event at Rooftop on Basin.

Ed shared the latest on compliance and suggested that business owners review the company’s handbook and non-compete agreements, keep supervisors trained, evaluate pay, treat employees fairly and listen and address their concerns. Small businesses are faced with the following issues: restriction covenants, the use of AI, DEI Program, political speech at work, independent contractors, COVID Isolation.

He added that it is difficult to comply with the Fair Labor Standard Act since there have been no major changes since 1938. The FLSA addresses minimum wage, child labor, etc. A proposal to increase minimum salary is expected in April 2024.  Ed also covered the difference between exempt and non-exempt employees. Referenced Wage and Hour fact sheet.
