Nunez Community College

Dr. Tina Tinney, Chancellor

Thanks to member George Messina for catering this week’s networking event at the Rooftop on Basin.

Tinney, was appointed Chancellor of Nunez Community College in Chalmette, Louisiana, in 2018 and is passionate about preparing the workforce for today and tomorrow through education.  Nunez is part of the Louisiana community and college system and is a sister institution to Delgado providing a robust workforce menu to support local industry. Out of forty thousand high school graduates, only four percent attend community colleges because Louisianans can’t access the training needed to fill in demand jobs. Nunez can fill this void and provide industry based credentials required for our fishing and maritime industries, as an example. Uniquely to Nunez is that the are providing the workforce for Boeing ultimately preparing students for a 20 year career in aerospace manufacturing at Michou. Other offerings include a Drone Academy, Coastal Restoration careers that require a skilled workforce. On the subject of renewable energy, Tinney, announced that, Louisiana is in a position to be a contender for offshore windfarms. Nunez will prepare to train the workforce in order to provide a “pipeline” for windfarm employers.

At a fraction of the cost of private and public four year colleges, Nunez is easily accessible and affordable with post pandemic, enrollment having increased by 12%.  Tinney encouraged employers to partner with them to customize a plan for their business.

Future Nunez project: Voyage Mark II Scale Model Solar System- Nunez will soon house the entire solar system on its linear campus in St. Bernard Parish. The college is one of 12 sites across the country approved by the National Center for Earth and Space Science Education and Exhibit ology to host a Voyage Mark II Scale Model Solar System.
