Bio District Project

Andy Kopplin, President and & CEO Greater New Orleans Foundation

Thanks to member George Messina for catering this week’s networking event at the Rooftop on Basin.

Kopplin kicked it off by saying that New Orleans is the largest job center in the state of Louisiana and that the Greater New Orleans Foundation is working to expand on that with a Bio District. Created in 2005, the District will be a medical research center for diseases like cancer. The project is being planned with the community in mind to ensure small businesses have access to the opportunities that it creates.
Modeled after best practices in Birmingham, Alabama, and Pittsburgh the idea is to have a research component that will attract research doctors and other supporting professionals. Kopplin announced the purchase of Charity and Tulane Hospitals by LCMC that will have clinical research programs, a retail section and an area dedicated to historical information regarding Charity Hospital. Kopplin shared a map of the Bio District footprint noting that some of the historical residential areas of the city will remain in place.  Area crime should be reduced noting that more activity equals a safer city.  The Foundation is committed to the implementation of a bio district, but will be slow as to ensure that the project is done right.
