Cybersecurity

Stephen Fessel, Supervisory Special Agent FBI

Thanks to member George Messina for catering this week’s networking event at the Rooftop on Basin.

Fessel, Special Agent for the FBI and Supervisor of the New Orleans Field Office Complex Financial Crimes Program and Computer Intrusion Program stressed the importance of staying aware of cyber threats.  The majority of Cyber attacks are committed overseas and can take several years to surface after information is stolen. Cyber hacking is used for different reasons such as during wartime (espionage), terrorism, to gain knowledge of a company’s client information, or for monetary ransom. He encouraged everyone to stay vigilant by training employees on watching for odd email requests as the perpetrator poses as a company employee requesting gift cards or money. Fessel strongly advised avoiding clicking on email links if it appears suspicious allowing them to gain access to computer files. Set up a process for employees, change passwords regularly and consider purchasing cybersecurity insurance and use two factor authentication. If you feel you have been scammed call the local FBI office to report within 72 hours for the best chances of retrieving the ransom.  Lastly review your plan with your IT person and attorney on a regular basis with basic cybersecurity hygiene: 2 factor authorization, avoid free email accounts, use ad blocker, logout every time and if you receive a suspicious email make a phone call.
