Lafitte Greenway Updates

Jason Neville, Lafitte Greenway Partnership, Executive Director

Thanks to GNOEA member George Messing, Owner Messina’s Catering, for hosting this week’s networking event for GNOEA members at the The Basin St. Station!

Jason is an urban planner whose mission is working with people to make cities better. He currently serves as Executive Director of the Lafitte Greenway Partnership, the City of New Orlean’s nonprofit partner managing and programming the Lafitte Greenway, a 2.6 mile linear park and bike trail that connects the French Quarter to Midcity visited 500,000 times annually. Jason holds an undergraduate degree in Urban Studies from University of New Orleans and a graduate degree in Urban Planning from the University of Southern California (USC). Jason has taught in the Tulane University Sustainable Real Estate Development program and USC’s Price School of Public Policy. Jason lives near the Lafitte Greenway with his wife and two young daughters, who learned to ride their bikes on the Greenway.

Mr. Neville informed the membership about the current and future plans for the Lafitte Greenway. The team consists of 3 team members. The Greenway was built 10 years ago and has over 500,000 visitors annually on the trails. In partnership with NORD, Friends of Lafitte Greenway hosts diverse and dynamic community programs that activate the Greenway, celebrate New Orleans’ unique culture, and bring people together.

GROW! is a landscape restoration project and fundraising campaign led collaboratively by Friends of Lafitte Greenway (Friends), NORD, Parks and Parkways, Sustaining Our Urban Landscape (SOUL), SPROUT NOLA, and Spackman Mossop Michaels. In order to ensure that the Greenway’s landscape is sustainable, safe, and beautiful over the long-term, and herbicide use is limited, the partners are undertaking this landscape restoration project.

Get Fit the Greenway fitness series is the largest and most impactful free year-round outdoor program in New Orleans since 2016. They offer a wide range of classes from yoga, dance cardio, strength training, a walking group and more. Classes happen in the spring, summer and fall.

The football field at the Greenway is currently in the process of getting the Super Bowl turf installed. The basketball court just received a major overhaul with custom painting.
